France #103, 1892....Quadrille paper. There are only two versions of this stamp listed in my Scott 08, this perfed stamp and an imperf, but it seems obvious that there was more than one printing. I am curious to see what a French specialized catalog might have.

Just found a cover from the 1850's/60's that has quadrilled paper.....first I've ever seen.

These lessons just get better and better. Thank you for your hard work on these. Why can't catalogs list examples like these?

Once again great lesson Tom.

I'm assuming you're using watermark fluid to see the quadrille image on the back of the stamps???

Hello Dianne...

You are correct......every group in this series will have at least one photo of the featured item in watermark fluid. Most are easily recognisable.

Mac.....

Can you imagine the size of each catalog if Scott included everything that is known about all issues ?? Suppose they included all info from the Micarelli, Neiken or Chases' 3cent......what would each volume cost ? It could easily double or triple the cost of a Scott Cat set, along with doubling the cost of shipping. The truth is, most collectors don't really care about these kinds of details. To me, these paper type differences make it possible to increase the size of any collection, and/or it gives every collector the option to collect something different from everyone else without a serious rise in cost in most cases. But, finding some/any of these odd papers on cover would be something special in any collection.

Now Here's a question Tom.

How would you be able to check the paper type with Watermark Fluid if it's on Cover

Hi Dianne.........

Once you know what to look for most paper types are recognisable from the front. Watermark fluid will not damage envelope paper.

Also, any difficult ones can be lifted/removed id'd and carefully hinged back in place. I've seen it done with covers worth hundreds/thousands. Some that immediately come to mind are grilled stamps on cover. Somewhere I have info showing examples, I'll see if I can find it for you.
