I'm going through some #499's and came across something about recut hair in the Scotts specialized catalog. Does anyone know how to ID these stamps and what should I be looking for? Thanks.

The 499 recut hair is probably the most distinctive recut on any U.S. stamp. The position had a defective transfer that was erased and a new entry transfered. the position was evidently damaged during the burnishing of the first entry requiring the second entry to be recut.

Both the upper and lower labels clearly show a previous entry along with several extra marks on the profile face.

Russ, is that an exact pic you have posted? I found one that looks similar to yours but not quite like it. But compared to my others, there is a significant difference.

Is that really what the re-cut looks like? That's just, well, weird!

Wow George got a Mullet cut back in the day. Is that from just one position on the plate and was it so strong for a long time or did it quickly wear down ?

This is a well known recut. Listed in the 'Cloudy French' book on page 100. Rare.
