Ever wonder how much revenue is/was generated by the US Semipostal Stamp Program? The USPS' recent 2012 Annual Report to Congress includes the following information that may be of interest to stamp collectors:

Quote:
The Breast Cancer Research stamp (1998–current) has generated net proceeds of $2.1 million in FY 2012 and nearly $75.8 million since it was first issued in 1998. These funds have gone to the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense.

The Save Vanishing Species series (September 2011–current) has generated net proceeds of $1.7 million since its release in September 2011. Funds from this semiPostal are being transferred to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Two other semiPostal stamps, the Heroes of 2001 and the Stop Family Violence stamps, are no longer on sale but generated $10.5 million for the Federal Emergency Management Agency and $3.1 million for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Quite impressive, I must say. A lot more than I had thought.

Just as an update to this thread, this item was just posted today (06/11/2013) on one of the USPS websites:

Given the information posted on 12/15/2012 wherein $75.8 million was said to have been raised, this suggests that an additional $1.45 million has been raised through this stamp in the past six months. bringing the new total to $77.25 million raised since the 1998 introduction of those stamps, which figures out to be slightly less than $250,000 per month over the past six months.

That is great, and also a big plus for semipostal stamps! I have two questions. First, does Scott give these a "B" number? And second, why does the Department of Defense get part of the money for breast cancer research?

First, yes. Scott does gives these stamps a "B" prefix designation. Of the four US semi-postal stamps issued to date, there have been the Breast Cancer Research Stamp (Scott B1); the Heroes of 2001 (Scott B2); the Stop Family Violence (Scott B3); and the Save Endangered Species (Scott B4).

Second, the Department of Defense monies are primarily used to fund breast cancer research grants as shown in the summary below. As the summary posted below is dated 2003, there is no doubt a later accounting that must be available with further research:
