I have many stamps I am new to it all. I inherited my grandfathers or great grandfathers collection. No glue on this one. He believed it was a #172

The 172 is extremely rare with only 36 examples certified. Scott describes the color as pale brown but it is really kind of a bronze brown with yellowish tint and a almost no reddish hue.

If I sent to pse what would you say it was for grading. My father said grandfather always thought it was 172

With the rarity of the re-issues and the high cost of certification I would suggest getting an opinion from Bill Weiss first. If it comes out positive then consider PSE or PF.

mdlock-- unfortunately your grandfather and/or great-grandfather didn't have the technology we have today, where we can see an image of the stamp we think and hope we have at the click of a mouse. The advantage today, is that some philatelic information is so much more available--- that is, some (some knowledge is still in books that are out of print, and very expensive).

Siegel power search for 172 shows perfs that don't look like normal perfs, and your stamp looks like normal perfs. The re-issues were all on hard, white wove paper, and were usually cut with scissors:

Here is one of the best on that site:

Hope this helps-- Ray

Could both this and mdlock's lincoln be perfed proofs or essays as rev mentioned on the other post? Have to say the color on this one is different but looks like soft paper.
Have to whole heartedly agree with Russ that pre internet the info and images availiable would tend many to believe they had this or that simply because it is the only other option in scotts. Now we can pull up examples of almost anything in a few seconds.
Regardless, both of your stamps are unique in some respects and worse case scenario is probably not a bad scenario. They both should grade pretty well all things considered.

These do not appear to be proofs, however the odds on it being a 172 are extremely small. It does have the secret mark however, so It is probably a 161.

The secret mark on the 10-cent Jefferson stamp consists of a small semi-circle in the scroll at the right end of the upper label that reads "U.S. POSTAGE":
