What Do These DDR Airplane Markings Mean?

What do these markings mean? Are they for a first flight (although that should've gotten a receiving cancel?). And why are they on clearly commercial covers- wouldn't they only usually mark the philatelic covers?

Probably special airline flights to Leipzig (for the autumn fair "Herbstmesse") during the period, August 31 to September 10.

As for the first image, "Leipziger Herbstmesse" is translated to Autumn Fair (or Trade Fair) which was apparently an annual event during the 1960s (and before).

Here's a 1968 stamp for the event, which uses the same "MM" logo as shown on your cover:
