Do you mean Silkote paper? If you do these are definitely scarce and were used in only one location to send Christmas greetings. I don't think any of the silkote paper stamps were coils. |

Thanks for the info rohumpy. The stamps I have are the brightest white paper I have seen. I know they have been well kept but they are not new out of the box so to speak. I have perfs on some and then some are coils. I don't think the paper would still be so white and they actually feel different that the paper on the other stamps |

This might sound dumb but I have a pair of these that I have long suspected could be a contender for the silkote however I also know the odds (and my luck) so they just sit in a shoebox! lol |

On the 2 cent coils, the later 'dry' printing has a different look and feel from the earlier 'wet' printing but they are almost as common. |

Well I'm more of a grasshopper than a guru but I guess I know a thing of two. I have looked at some actual silkote paper issues (thanks to Google images) and although I can't remember from where I know that they was experimental and only used in one region and have a look to them. I believe they also contain silk fibers so there you go. |

This info is from the book "The Liberty Series" by Lawrence, Eeles and Wawrukiewicz. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing made one test batch of 500 of the 2cent Jefferson on Silkote paper in October or November 1954. They were printed from plates 25061 and 25062 on the Huck Press. The entire printing was shipped to the Westbrook Maine PO and placed on sale on Dec. 17, 1954, at the Cumberland Mills branch in time for the Christmas mailing rush. A couple of panes and a handful of plate blocks were kept by employees of the paper mill, but the great majority were used on Christmas mail.
This may be more info than you needed, but the result is that covers are rare and the mint stamps are scarce.
THe two plate numbers are very common and if you find one, it does not mean you have found a printing on Silkote paper.
Sorry it took me an extra day to post. |

The note in the Scott Specialized indicates that 50,000 stamps were printed using the Silkote paper. |

In my post I always thought 500 was very small number. Maybe it is 500 panes of 100 each which would be 50,000. |
