Excuse my ignorance of U.S. stamps especially back of book...i did try to find facsimile overprints in my U.S. specialized..curious as to why they are overprinted thus !
philb, got a picture of one of these, or a better description? I recall some revenue facsimiles but nothing else comes to mind. There were some department stamps (officials) that were genuine stamps but overprinted to demonetize them for sale to collectors but I do not remember details about the overprint.
I guess I was a bit vague..in my eternal browsing of stamps on the internet I saw the description "group of newspaper and periodical issues" facsmilie overprint...they look just like the statue series of newspaper stamps in the Scotts specialized..so I was curious whether they were original stamps and who overprinted them ! Should be some interesting info out there !
The seller of this facsimile of PR72 includes the following in his description:
Quote: ...said to have been made in Germany before the turn of the century to meet the demand there for these high face value and difficult to obtain stamps.
