I just picked up the gray-black example and am very pleased to fill a big hole in my collection. I'm trying to determine whether it is a transfer or re-cut variety, based on the wide, blurred line at the bottom. Any comments?

The line could be heavy due to a recut frameline alongside an original frameline. It doesn't add any value. I actually don't trust the scan. Can you post a different scan of the front and back of the stamp against a black background?

Thanks for looking closely, Sinclair. The scanner may have "jiggled" a slight bit. The re-scans against the same black background don't show as prevalent a line at the bottom.

I am pretty sure the stamp is position 91L1 which means it is from the bottom left corner of the left pane of Plate 1. I can also be pretty certain that is neither on thin paper or part India paper. Does the stamp have an ironed-out horizontal crease or is just a bend in the paper?

If I were to guess, it looks like the paper may have been bent at one time and given more time to flatten out. Not really a crease, but well-rounded. Also, I'm no expert in this time period, but the paper seems very thin to me. Thanks again for your help in identifying it better.
