A Couple Of Precancel Questions

I have some precancels from collections I buy. I usually throw them into a glassine and file it away. I pulled some out the other day to more or less play with. All of the precancels are up to the prexies as I don't buy much after that. There are different size fonts, different spacing inbetween the bars and of course the single bars vs the DLE bars. Then there are hand stamped varieties. Do collectors really try to get all the different styles that were made? Most towns are readable but here is one I can't figure out.




Then I found this one with looks like 1 DLE bar and one solid bar.Did they use different styles in the same canceling device?

The top one is Cincinnati, Ohio.




They most certainly do! And some cities have dozens of varieties of precancels to collect, too. Here's a link to an article that shows a just bit of what all there is to collect:

Wow, Cincinnati. That would have been my last guess. I saw the tear under Washington's eye and thought that's the same way I feel when trying to figure out precancels without a proper book.

Re. New York. I don't think it's a different style of bar at the top; I think it's a bar of the same type that hasn't inked properly. Hence you can see only a dim trace at the top of the bar. I've had a quick flip through the style chart and there is no such combination as a double with a single. I also considered the possibility that it might be Local G1E (normally 2 double lines) with the bottom one OVERinked. But it's not - the letters don't line up right for G1E.

It looks like the inking device didn't work. It is interesting the outer lines show up yet nothing in the center.

Interesting previous post. Looking at the lines they seemed to have problems with breakage or ink flow. I'm sure N.Y. alone had millions of precancels. No doubt they would have some problems. I still don't think it is something I will ever get into. Back into the glassine til later.
