i used to work in offices for a long time and have always collected the plate numbers from the business mail.
i have I guess about 75 to 100 on cover.
does having them on cover add any addition book value to the stamp?

they are H (33c) Hat (3264/66), 32c Flag over Porch, 29c Flag over White House (2609), 29c Flag over Mount Rushmore (2523/A), 25c Flag over Trees (2280), 33c Flag over City (3280-82), 33c Berries (vert) (3304), G (32c) Old Glory (2889-92),F (29c) Flower (2518), (34c) Orchid (flower) (3462)

does being on cover even with just a clear window address envelope?

thanks for any help

Generally, no. (Not for modern issues anyway.)

But there's more to it than that. Many collectors today strive for the entire cover because of the postal markings and cancellations. The stamps you recite go back to the use of CDS postmarks, which is another collecting discipline, as are any slogan cancellations, and other postal markings that may be present, etc.

If you (or someone you sell them to) decides to remove the stamps from the cover, that can be considered later on. As with all philatelic material, once the stamps are separated from the cover, you can never put them back in that format, so I'd err on the side of keeping them on cover (provided you have adequate storage space) just to be sure.

Are you going to get a better return on selling them later on by leaving the stamps on cover? Probably not. But as stated earlier, when the stamps are on-cover it often leads to more interest as there are more collecting options to consider than just for the stamp itself.

Lonedan, if you are talking about plate number coils on cover, the answer is YES! PNC3 ( the Plate Number Coil Collectors Club ) issues a price list of plate number coils every couple of years. Their last price list includes among other items PNC's on cover, and was issued in April of 2011. I do not think it is available any longer but if you would like to know any prices I will be glad to list them for you.
As an afterthought I give you the website of a PNC cover specialist: www.modcoverguy.com.
Also, if you would like for me to look up the price of a cover please give me the Scott# and the platenumber! The plate# is very important. For instance, Scott 2136 on cover is 75 cents for plate 2,3 &4, but $10.00 for plate 5!

I disagree! They are absolutely worth more on cover. Someday you will encounter a fanatic with deep pockets that ONLY collects them on cover (a tiny proportion of all that's out there) and he/she will go nuts, and you will receive a handsome price, trust me.

OK, I got all of them for you, Lonedan!

2915A ( 2222 ) $ 1.00
( 4544 & 9999 ) $ 1.25

2915a ( 11111a & 33333a ) $ 2.00
( 66666a & 77777a ) $1.50

2907 $ 5.00
3447 (10cent) NY library $5.00 if untagged. This stamp has been found tagged, but no used on cover examples have been found so far.

If you need help with 2915A ( the one with the PP/VV and VV/PP varieties ) please let me know!

Good luck, Peter

Doug2222, I AM one of those fanatics, although I only collect the Transportation Coils on cover. And you are so right, some of these have gone through the roof!

Wt1, the Plate Number Coil Collectors Club, or PNC3 issues a values list every couple of years. The last one, from which I quoted the prices was issued in the spring of 2011. A new values list will be issued later this year and will ( hopefully ) include a values list for precancel gaps.

Lonedan, Happy to help. The stamp is either 2915A or 2915C, but very hard to tell. Somehow the scan is not clear and I can not count the die cuts on each side. Is it possible to rescan on a black background?

not sure scanning on a black background is advisable, as it would no longer be on cover....
