You know by now that I am only a stamp collector because
I was passed my father's collection when he died.
You might also have heard how he was both hard of sight
and COLORBLIND! (I have no idea how he collected stamps
while being colorblind...) I have found many stamps placed
wrong in the album that were TOTALLY wrong... as in green
stamps where a red one should be, for example. Occaisionally
I still find smaller mistakes like wrong perf counts and such.
Anyway, the other day Doug put up and auction for a pair of really
sweet 512 and 343 Franklins (Pics below). So I opened the album
and checked out the 512 Dad had placed long ago. Turns out
that Doug's 512 was an upgrade since it was 'mint'. Actually
the 512 in the album was really sweet as well. Perfect centering,
bright color, no hinge, and only a very light cancel. I bid
solely on upgrading a really nice used for a really nice unused,
that and I had no 343 at all...
So fast forward to today, the stamps arrived. I pulled out the
album and filled the 343 hole. Then I went to the 512 and very
gently pulled out the used 512, it was a very pretty example,
so I didn't want to be rough with it. Then I placed the mint
512 I got from Doug... 2 holes filled. Now what to do with the
pretty little used 512 I just pulled?
I look at the back, and there are pencil marks...
They say "12 x SL 417"!

This gorgeous used stamp wasn't even a 512!
Page back to the 417 album spot, sure enough, no stamp!
3 holes filled with 2 stamps!
Thanks Doug!
