Even in 1903, if the sender could afford preprinted stationery with a return address on it, they could probably afford the two cents to mail to down the street. It could have also contained an invitation, announcement or a professional services bill or the like, which would have made it rather awkward to deliver in person.

In my youth I used to live literally around the corner and down the block from there (too many years ago to think about), and that street should be pretty much all 3 story brownstones. It would have been a pretty nice area in those days.

If Google Maps is any indication, the area doesn't look too bad even today with, of course, the same 3-story brownstones (only much older).

I mailed a Christmas card to my across the road neighbor. Somehow I think cards should arrive in the mail.

I Googled a place on Middagh St. where I rented an apartment in the 1960s for 94 dollars a month...would not have recognized the place..its amazing what they can do with buildings..of course the rent is now 15x or more..what used to be a firehouse a few doors down looks like its now an antique shop..

The area is pretty nice today, but back in the 70's when I lived around there it was not remotely the best place to live. That part of Brooklyn has made a fine comeback.
