I recently acquired this old Insurance receipt. What I found particularly interesting was what the policy cost. I have always been fascinated with changing price levels over the years. Based on my calculations and if I read it correctly. The price of home insurance has gone down substantially. This person paid $5.80 for $1200 of coverage. Or .0048 per every dollar of coverage. I pay about $400 for $180000 of coverage. That's .0022 per dollar. Half the cost. Of course I may have a good deal or this guy had a bad one. Or maybe my calculations are in error, math was never my best subject. Any mathematicians out feel free to chime in. And I almost forgot this is a stamp forum, any comments on the rev. stamp welcomed. I believe this is a case where the document is more interesting than than the stamp.

$1 in 1863 equals:
$18.50 using the Consumer Price Index
$15.00 using the GDP deflator
$141.00 using the unskilled wage
$280.00 using the Production Worker Compensation
$213.00 using the nominal GDP per capita
$1,980.00 using the relative share of GDP

However you probably get much better coverage and for more possibilities then that person did, changes in technology alone would account for that.

A Dollar is not what it used to be, that is for sure. It is a tough comparison with so many different variables. And whatever I am saving on home insurance I am spending on auto insurance. This guy in 1863 probably had a real good deal for his horse and buggy.

No insurance agent here, but there area lot more people to around to spread the risk to. Also the ability to detect and supress fires has greatly inproved, in the last 150 years. Not to mention the establishment of professional fire departments with realiable water supplies. Hopefully the state regulators will insure any claim are paid as a lot of thesecompanies just walked away from there part of the contract.

That's just friggin hilarious. So you either manually or botted a search for forums that mention insurance, come across a six month old thread in a stamp forum that mentions insurance from the 1800s, actually joined the forum, even added an avatar and then proceeded to spam an insurance company. You, my friend, have won the internet today. Congrats!
