Knights Of Malta

i may be punished for showing this without permission,,my wife is doing a write up about the Unification of Italy which leads to the Vatican States which leads to the Knights of Malta. I think its a nice cover, came from the Lingens today !

Unknown to many, the Sovereign Military Order of Malta is the third "enclave" inside Italy, the first two being Vatican City and San Marino. SMOM occupies two buildings in Rome, from which it manages its worldwide charitable and educational services (and issues stamps).

San Marino and the Vatican issue real stamps. From what I can tell, the SMOM must issue cinderellas.

Larry I think they have treaties with some countries that honor their stamps ! Of course I am often wrong !

Here is the current situation for their stamps:

"...The SMOM began issuing euro-denominated postage stamps in 2005, although the scudo remains the official currency of the SMOM. Also in 2005, the Italian post agreed with the SMOM to deliver internationally most classes of mail other than registered, insured, and special-delivery mail; additionally 56 countries recognize SMOM stamps for franking purposes, including those such as Canada and Mongolia that lack diplomatic relations with the Order."

Phil, my definition of a real stamp is pretty simple...

Is it in the Scott Catalog?

I wonder if they are listed in any European catalogs.

MV, with Scott adding new material to the Classic all the time, your definition of a stamp has to constantly expand. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

O.K. so the Scott catalog is your bible..some of us use the Michel and specialized country catalogs to supplement the Scott catalogs !
