i was looking at a site that sales pnc3 stamps and there was listed different varieties of these stamps.

i have been looking closer at the copies that I have.

there mentions bell and other terms

these appear to be bells but I am not sure if the left stamp is a bell on the left top of the first stamp on the left..i am fairly certain the
right stamp has a bell on both side the right on both stamps is inverted.

this second scan is interesting
it appears to be a misalignment

i noticed the plate numbers
next I noticed the 44 cents being off
third I noticed the left side of the stamp in the stripes [they look like a flame on a hot rod car]

The misalignment you notice is called a color misregistration or a color shift.

The plate number shows the V and the last 1 OK but the three 111's in the center shifted upwards. These are also, on this stamp, the color dots or traffic lights, showing the colors used for the printing of the stamp.

Very noticeable and very interesting to a collector of color shifts (misregistrations).

I do not know about the bell in the perforations.

Dan - Starting with your 3rd stamp - the two horizontal marks at the lower right in the red & white stripes are scrapes most likely caused by the mail handling equipment. The other things you note about this stamp are caused by a downward shift of the black.

Your first stamp has what has been named a dramitic die cut shift (the name itself being a bit overdramatic). The left side of the stamp is a normal PV (starts with a peak, ends with a valley), and then there was a sudden downward shift on the right side causing a bell shape at the top right.

Your second stamp had a downward shift of the die cutting on both sides causing a bell shape at the top (I'm not 100% sure, but I think they say the bell in this case is at the upper left).

Lonedan, basically this is a very common stamp. Even the bell top on the right hand side is not too unusual. But...the first stamp you scanned is a bit of an oddball. I believe that the die cut has shifted, although it is very hard to tell on the scan. This would make the stamp fairly rare!
The second stamp ( on the white paper ) appears to also have a bell, but on both sides. The third stamp looks like a bell bottom ( no pun intended! ) on both sides.

LoneDan,
Here is a link to the PNC Collectors site - http://www.pnc3.us/pnc3.org/
You can find information on the PNC's you have along with explanations of the Peak/Valley - Valley/Peak, etc.
Look under the PNC Data link.
Hope this helps.
