Quote:
"...During the late 1930s and 40s, when business and industry began to take note of philately as a rapidly growing hobby, the advertising world also began to recognize the potential business value of creating first-day covers as a form of promotional medium -- both as a message that would be read and as an item that would likely be retained or passed along to others. This helps ensure an advertiser's message is remembered or shared..."
Wayne Youngblood, March 2013

Wayne Youngblood's article "Promotional FDCs Created for Many Reasons" in the March 2013 issue of American Philatelist started me wondering if the topic had ever been the subject of a SCF thread. I didn't find anything apart from passing mention in a search of the forum's active threads so I thought I'd start this post to see if any of our members had any of these marketing tools in their collections.

My only promotional FDC (thus far) is from the Phoenix-Connecticut Group of Fire Insurance Companies on this July 11, 1945 FDC of the Iwo Jima issue (Scott 929). The cachet on the cover is from the House of Farnam. Included was an insert card with a message from the Group's Vice President. The cover was cataloged in Mellone's as 929-51.

This is a great collecting area. Here are a few U.S. covers:

Texas Refinery Corporation

Inserts are interesting:

Campbell Sales Company

Artmaster Cachet

Pharmaceutical Stamp

Nice promotional covers, thanks for sharing. I have wondered if one or two specific ad agencies were responsible for the popularity of promotional first day covers or if it was just the overall popularity of the hobby.

I think when the trade noticed that "one" had used FDCs, they all had to. There's a certain "pack" mentality in the advertising biz. Or was, at that time.

Here's a nice letter accompanied by a FDC from the Muzak Corporation:

And the Foxboro Company cleverly identified the stamp and tried to connect it by keeping their product in the mind of the consumer:

Great covers all thanks for sharing! I love that Campbell's soup cover and flyer. I have quite a few of these from the 60's from a pharmaceutical company - great stuff.
