I just acquired a MASSIVE precancel dealers stock, from Germany of All places. There are over 40,000 stamps ( mostly prexies and other definitives ). All nicely sorted by Sc#, State & town . There are NO values on any of the stamps ( he has them in small glassines ). They are both MNH & used. My questions is this
How does one value these? I know there are specialty precancel catalogs from societies, but I have never seen one. Can anyone scan a single page of he prexie listing from one of these catalogs so I can see if it's worthwhile purchasing the set?
Also, how does one price them. Used values, Mint values? How are they collected? ( as mint, or used - I suspect mostly used ).
I am thinking of compiling a database from these ( the prexies to start with ). I think I am hooked. I got these for a very reasonable price & am a bit of a history nut, so the towns will have lots of historical value to me ).
any help is appreciated. I did go to the precancel society site, but did not get the info I needed
thanks Marios

Precancels are not the easiest to evaluate - even if you have all the catalogs. They are weird because although the vast majority are not 'worth' 0.05 USD, old unpicked collections turn up with valuable items. The collecting adage: "scarce stamps are scarce" is so true, the chance you have something hi-priced is remote. If it looks like a real collection, lovingly formed, with lots of different denominations - you have a better chance. If it is massive quantities of presidentials in glassines - they may be 'worth' ten for a penny or less.
If you scan a few pages that look interesting and show them here - we can evaluate what you show.

Hi, will do. There are very few duplicates in this lot. Maybe two copies of some. Usually 1 mint & 1 used. My question was really more along the lines of are MINT precancels collected and are they worth more than used copies.By mint, I mean full OG ( wont get into NH or H ) I did read the previous link, but did not get the info I was looking for. Guess I will buy a used catalog somewhere. Maybe eBait

When you post the images, we can help you select the right catalog. In general - mint precancels are NOT collected and carry little premium. Exception: some collectors are crazy for NH. |

Why aren't mint precancels collected? I would have to disagree with that statement at any rate. When it comes to stamps and condition...need I say more?- Even though mint precancel is a contradiction of terms I understand them to be a stamp which bears a town/city/state precancel stamp on it and retains the gum in it's original state as issued to the permit holder/person. |

I_Love_Stamps, I have been collecting precancels for about 12 years. Chasa...a lot longer. As a precancel "purist", the reason why so many precancel collectors don't like mint is because they were not postally used. It creates what we call, "collector inspired" items. Joe Collector can go to his friendly PO and asks to have some sheets precancels, for his collection only of course. Or, Joe collector makes his own device to precancel stamps, for his collection only of course. And yes, all the above have been done before. Just my thoughts on why not mint.

I guess I see your point. I too collect mainly postally used subjects but not precancels so not my forte. Thank you for the information- both of you. |
