I was sorting through at least 200+ of this design looking for the illusive perf 11 rotary (#595) and I happened upon this little fella. Look at the top border just above the "TA" in STATES. Do you see that little white line? What would cause this? Maybe just something on the plate obscuring the printing process or a plate scratch? What are your thoughts?

Given the lack of definition, I would think it was foreign matter in the press.

Considering it's visible on top of the cancel, I think it's just damage incurred during mailing. It actually looks like a thread of lint stuck to the stamp.

Doug I must respectfully disagree with you on this one. It isn't lint but could have been an obstruction. Look at the ink bleeding (wet print?) it's evident in that too so proof it's not lint. It almost appears to have the signature M.O. of a pre-fold but there is no evidence on the back of it as I looked at it with a 30x loupe. No biggie and I'm going to just toss it in the pile but I thought it was worth a second look.

I disagree. I think it was a foreign object that got in the presses, and caused the paper it contacted to compress, making it look whiter, and obscuring some of the ink from hitting the paper.

I believe it was indeed either an adherence or a simple inclusion or blemish on the paper's surface that caused a valley or a low spot.

Edited for spelling/grammatical correction
