Hello,

I just received the stamp shown below, purchased on ebay. Described as "MINT HINGED, OG VF/XF."

There is no gum on the posterior aspect of the selvage. The hinge mark is faint and the stamp otherwise looks good. I asked the seller about the gum and was told that it is normal for stamps of this era to not have any gum in the selvage area.

Can anyone here confirm if this is correct?

Thanks!

Beautiful example and not often seen as a plate single.

Thanks all. It's an exciting addition to the collection. The perforation line between the stamp and selvage is a little flimsy and the color has faded and run just a little more than can be appreciated in the photograph. Still, overall I'm pleased with the purchase.

Could someone comment on the line under the plate number and the dot between the 8 and the right 4.

When plates are laid down, the workers may use 'layout dots' and 'layout lines' to get things shipshape.
You can also see the faint line under the plate number. They are usually 'burnished' off the plates before use, but sometimes the remnants are visible. They are more commonly seen on 19th century US stamps.

A guideline and position dot for used by the engraver to align the plate number correctly. They show up from time to time on many stamps.

occasionally the gum not only fails to make it into the selvage, but it fails to completely go to the edge ofthe stamp (short gummed)
