I bought a large box of mostly damaged US stamps at my club meeting. I'm always up for the chase, so the first items I pulled out was all of the early red Washingtons. I found quite a few with odd marks (overinking, etc.) and was on the very last stamp out of about 400 when this one came up. Not a pretty one, but it's my first Double-Cap Washington, and the entire box cost $1.00, so I guess I'm ahead on this deal.

That is one good thing about buying stamps in lots of any size. There's always the chance you could find an overlooked gem.

Still have lots more to go through, but the lot was in pretty bad condition, so even if there is a gem in there, it will be rated VG at best. However, having searched for that item for years and years, and not willing to pony up a few bucks for an ebay version, I'm glad to finally fill that hole.

And it was kind of fun, going through that huge pile, looking carefully at each one, tossing every single one of them aside while the pile gets smaller and smaller, then seeing that the last one, "looks a little odd". Wiping the dust off my glasses, checking again, and then the final realization that, "This is the one I was looking for!"

I recently went through about 5-600 of them too and came up empty. Ended up just picking them both up for about 15 on bidstart LOL - I felt like I was cheating the system at the time

nice find

Pretty neat. As IBS states, there is always the possibility of a great find. Now I have to look for the Left 2 cap. (I'll have to buy more to look through, though.)
