Are there any tips for extreme newbies like me? I only collected when I was a kid, and mainly those were world stamps. I also have a few old letters with US stamps from the 1940's. I'll post some of this stuff up when I get to scan it. Interested in buying some 1860's-1880's stamps to go along with some of coins. Any tips would be appreciated.

Checkout Linns.com for some help with the basics.

StampWants.com is a huge marketplace for stamps with many dealers participating.

Stamp Auction Network brings together a huge number of stamp auction houses, large and small, is a great place to bid on better items, like civil war covers.

Nutmeg is one of my favorite auction houses. Here is a link to their Sale - 162

My favorite stamp site for U.S. classics (up to 1970) is

http://www.1847usa.com/Default.htm

Also useful, especially for more recent years, is

http://album.dweeb.org/

(Jim's Stamp Album) which gives dates of issue and Scott numbers.

Thanks for posting those Jan!
There is an excellent glossary of philatelic terms at the 1847 site.
