This news article about the upcoming New England Lighthouses Stamps was just published by Fox News in Providence, RI:

http://www.foxprovidence.com/dpps/n...uses_6321037

Although it appears to be a typical news release about the Point Judith Lighthouse Stamp to be issued in Narragansett, RI, the news release goes on to say that:

Quote:
All five lighthouses' stamps will be sold together in a set of 20 stamps. The U.S. Postal Service also created a special strip of five Point Judith lighthouse stamps to be sold in Rhode Island.

I find it odd that with all of the published information about this upcoming stamp, that I haven't seen anything in print (i.e. Postal Bulletin, USPS Website, etc.) that suggests that such special strips of five stamps will be available.

Will similar strips of 5 be available for EACH of the stamps for each New England State represented by their particular lighthouse? What is the distribution arrangements -- or are they only available at each FDOI ceremony location? Or within each state? Or via SFS?

Does anyone have further information about this? Or could the published information in this media article be inaccurate?

I was placing an order today with SFS so I inquired about this "special strip of 5 Point Judith Lighthouse Stamps for the Rhode Island market". They knew nothing of it. They suggested I contact the Narragansett RI post office, which I did, however, they referred all philatelic inquiries to the Wakefield, RI post office.

The clerk I spoke with at Wakefield, RI did acknowledge that there is going to be a "special strip of 5 of the Point Judith Lighthouse stamps" but they will not be available statewide; as they will only be available to those attending the FDOI ceremony. As far as he knew, there was no availability through SFS, the local FDOI post office or the Narragansett Chamber of Commerce and Narragansett Historical Society's Philatelic Committee, who are both touting these special items on their respective websites.

So it would seem if you are not able to attend the FDOI ceremony is person, there is no way to acquire these special strips of 5 Point Judith Lighthouse stamps.

With such a limited market appeal, it must be that someone is intentionally creating a strip of 5 Point Judith Lighthouse stamps simply by taking them from a conventional pane and placing them on new backing paper. It would seem impractical that it would be any kind of a special printing with the availability being so limited, especially since it would appear that no other New England Lighthouse stamps are making a similar offering.

Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see what collectors who attend the FDOI ceremony in Narragansett, RI can actually acquire.

One wonders if they aren't misinformed and that it is a normal strip of 5 with 5 different LH designs that includes the Pt Judith design.
