Hi All

While going through some of my US New Years postcards for one of March's postings, I noticed this cancellation on the back of one of them and it is a machine cancellation which, I believe is an International machine Company one (?) It is dated December 24, 1914 and #4/C and inscribed "CANAL STATION". Was this cancel used often?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Yes, the Chicago Canal Station postmark was quite common for the day. If you search ebay you'll find several similar examples available at modest prices.

In fact, there was an earlier (scarcer?) Canal Station Postmark that looked like this (kind of interesting that they used a wavy line in the killer part of the postmark):

They are certainly collectible.

Speaking of ... does anyone here know anything about canal mail? I assume that mail was transported on canals, but I have not been able to find much. I am particularly interested in Erie Canal mail. Thanks!
