Getting Interested In Older US Covers

As I do my window shopping on ebay..never successful on decent material as the competition is the whole planet..i think I may be acquiring a taste for pre 1940 U.S. Covers..they are plentiful and inexpensive compared to say Guatemala covers of the same era..i can pick a particular theme or even stamp and put together a individualized collection..now to the U.S. catalog for ideas !

i think I will start my cover collection rather broadly at first..perhaps covers from my local counties Dutchess and Columbia and perhaps to a smaller extent Ulster co. right accross the bridge..the stamp I am considering at the moment is the 14 cent American indian stamp but I would have to read up on its main reason for existance at the time...14 cent stamp that is..

The stamp features a portrait of Sioux leader Hollow Horn Bear.

I am not sure there was any specific rate for a 14c stamp. It is difficult to find on cover.

Yes, I agree. Here are some possible uages for a 14c stamp:

1) special delivery overweight letters (1-2 ounces) - double the 2c first class rate plus 10c special delivery

2) registered overweight letters (2-3 ounces) - triple the 2c first class letter rate plus 8c registration
This partial cover on eBay may be an example of this rate.



3) makeup postage for use on heavier packages and on shipping tags

Here is a "special delivery" cover on ebay with a solo Scott #565.



However this is a first day cover prepared by Henry Hammelman and
does not represent a double-weight special delivery usage.

I think this would be a great way to expand your collection. If you find that you have some trouble finding the 14 cent with the cancels you want. you might want to consider incorporating the whole set rather than just the one stamp. A full set with similar cancels on cover would make a handsome collection.

My biases aside... a few areas of United States postal history to study, that are inexpensive, and lots of fun are:

6¢ Teddy Roosevelt stamp from the Liberty Series
1932 series honouring 200th Anniversary of the birth of George Washington
3¢ Win The War stamp

An even tougher challenge would be to include examples of Canal Zone #116 postally used on cover.
