Picked up this cover, and a few others while B/S ing
with Phil, today at the White Plains Show.

Judging from the contents of the letter, the postmark
should be April 20, 1893

Tom...Yes I did find that type of cancel quite odd.

I am hoping that, The Cover Master, T360 may be able to
shed some light on it

That purple oval looks like a real find, Bob! The South Shaftsbury post office was open from 1831-1961. I haven't seen this exact one before. It may be listed in Slawson's Book "The Postal History of Vermont." with some indication of scarcity.

Some small towns used similar ovals in the 1880s like this one from Acworth, New Hampshire.

specializes in Vt town cancels.
