What is an H.P.O. first trip cover?

Find some on ebay, but it must only be for those in the know since the term goes undefined.

Reading addresses and sorting mail on a moving bus. Doesn't sound like a fun job. I think I would have gotten carsick. I wonder what the inside looked like and how many people worked in it.

I have been considering adding HPO's to my route 66 collection. Those are very nice looking cachets. thanks for sharing. HPO's were a new concept for sorting mail, much like RPO's years earlier. I think I have a HPO cover from an HPO exhibit at the IL State Fair with a brochure explaining it. Now I just need to find it.

The pamphlet is very interesting! It is a little blurry, though, and I can't make out all the text. It says that in addition to the driver, there were one or more "Postal Transportation Clerks" in the back sorting mail.

OK, I get the HPO part, but why? Did they serve out of the way locations?

The idea was to actually sort the mail while it is moving toward its destination to save time.
Stampdude - could you post some better scans of the text on the your pamphlet?
