I Got A Message...

Sorry to bother the list with this, but I don't want to be rude. I got a friendly email message from a list member asking about my avatar, and I want to respond, but I don't yet know how to send private messages to other list members (through the list apart from my private email). So, in answer to the question:

My avatar is a Scott listed essay from the series known as the "Large Numeral Essays" of the Continental Bank Note Company. They were all produced (1868-69) and submitted by Continental in 1869 in an attempt to lure the stamp contract away from the National BNCo when the pictorials were proving unsatisfactory. This essay is a progress essay toward a second type of three cent design suggestion. These essays are particular favorites of mine, and the story of their evolution is an untold current project of mine. Hence the avatar. I can show you a larger image of it or others in the series if there is any interest in seeing things like that.

Sorry for taking liberties with the list, and when I learn how to do direct replies it won't happen again.

Thank you for that. I will keep that in mind and use it. However, in this case the message came directly to me and the user did not give his avatar name, but only his real name. I couldn't make a connection. Not sure how to get around that without bugging the list.

The email coming directly to you . . . did it have a header telling about Stamp Community at all?

Perhaps it was from someone else than from Stamp Community? Not sure.

Essayk: Thanks very much for posting this! I, too, saw some prior post of yours and was really interested in the image you used in your avatar. I had intended to send you a note to ask about it, but didn't get around to it, and am glad that someone else did!

I would personally vote for you to create a thread where you show some of your essays. This is not a collecting field for me (I don't even collect US), but really enjoy seeing US designs that "might have been". I'm sure it would be enjoyed by many on here.

Ah, you guys have been an immense help, and I thank you for all your patience. Not only have I learned how to direct the email, but I have found the person who sent the message that got this all started for me.

Some of you have asked to see a larger image of the avatar pic, and suggested putting it in a new thread. I will do that for whatever of this series you would like to see (if I have it). Maybe some of you will get an urge to pursue some of the "might have beens" too.
