That's true, but sometimes it is still possible to see the ridges on the paper.

Soaking would allow you to see if the overprint appeared impressed into the stamp -- a sign of a likely counterfeit.

The plate number is one of two that were used for production of the Nebraska issue (Durland).

The overprint should measure approximately 9.0 mm and the spacing of the overprints on the vertical pairs should be 22 mm (Paul W. Schmid).

If the measurements are correct, and you don't see any sign of the overprint being impressed then I'd be fairly confident that your block was legitimate.

Another way to detect counterfeits:

Now can you just imagine what kind of a stamp collecting nightmare might have developed had the USPOD gone forward with a proposal to do the same thing on stamps for the remaining 46 States!
