Hi All

I just got this cover from France out of a dealer's box. It is post WW II and it is an airmail cover plain enough but what perks my interest is the cancellation tying the stamps. It is inscribed PARIS 118 / R.D. AMSTERDAM but, it is addressed to the US.

Can I assume that this is some type of 'transportation' postmark??

Thanks a lot.

The "R" stands for Rue or Street. It's for the post office at Rue de Amsterdam. The more common railway postmarks of France are scalloped in shape with the names of two towns with an "A" in between.

Thanks Battlestamps

I know about the scalloped ones you refer to but thought this was another type. Glad I found out.

I didn't lose anything at 50 cents

There is a Par Avion handstamp so it did travel by airmail. The postmarks are quite clear and nice air mail stamp too so you got your money's worth I think.

I don't think I lost anything either Battlestamps.

I went crazy yesterday at a stamp show I attended and bought 108 covers at 50 cents apiece. Granted, there was nothing worth a fortune, but, there were some nice pieces of stationery in there and other odds and ends. Some items would actually sell for $5.00 plus. I guess the dealer selling them would not have the time to sort all through them, but I did.
