I'm looking at an US classic item with a cert by PBS Certification Services. I have no idea what PBS stands for nor any knowledge of this particular organization. Have any of you dealt with this service? Are they reliable?

It sounds a bit suspicious based on this previous post from a couple of years ago (2010):

A link or an item number would have been nice.....

For the benefit of others here is an auction ending today with a PBS certificate. It is a remarkable piece of work. The description may have been pulled from a hat considering the accuracy. The stamp is an 11A from Plate 1L. Plate 1L stamps should be obvious to anybody claiming to know enough about stamps to state what plate the stamp was printed from. Oh the stamp could have an orange brown color in the semi-rare experimental orange brown shade but based on the last certificate that I saw from PBS, he knows what that shade looks like too!

PBS I think was an attempt by Paul Smith or Beth Pauze to start up another certification service. I personally do not know if the company that went under the name PSA Stamps had the qualification or knowledge to do this. Though they did do some business as their stamp certificates are in the market place.

I believe they where from the state of Illinois but I could be wrong.

I may be wrong but I am thinking certifications from PSA do not hold the value or recognition as the other companies do.

Confident in our abilities to perform the same services as other organizations at a fraction of the cost and with much faster turnaround time, we decided to offer these services to other collectors that want the same assurance the items they have purchased are genuine in all regards. We will not provide a numeric grade or render an opinion on value, as that is merely an estimate based on current market and other criteria. We will ensure a Qualified Analysis and Authentication at a very reasonable cost.

Our Guarantee: If an item you submit to receives a documented, expert evaluation from an another established and qualified philatelic expertization, authentication or certification service on the identity of an item submitted to PBS Stamps that differs from our authentication, within six (6) months from the Authentication date on your certificate, we will provide a full refund for services and shipping pending the following: You must be the original submitter of the item; The item must not undergo any alteration, enhancement, damage, separations, etc. from the time of our original evaluation in; Proof of a different opinion rendered after the date of our authentication must be provided; and the right to have PBS Stamps re-evaluate (no charge) must be allowed.

Our guarantee covers the identity of an item (i.e., Scott Catalog #, description, fault, repair or alteration identification) as stated on the Certificate of Authenticity. Specific verbiage used that differs from ours but indicates the same evaluation may not qualify for a refund. Feel free to contact us for more details. Give PBS Authentication Services at Try.

If for any reason your item cannot be evaluated with 100% confidence, or within 7 days (excluding mailing holidays) we will immediately return your item exactly as received plus all costs refunded. We Do Not Guess or Delay!

Service and Shipping Information: The cost of the Authentication Service is per item submitted for evaluation that ships in standard size envelopes up to 11"x14". Secure, return postage included in the cost of services. Privately insured, but we would require delivery confirmation, certified or registered delivery charges if you wish you have us insure your item. Specialized return shipping services (insurance, registered, certified delivery, other carriers) will be provided upon request at actual cost. Additional charges may apply for uncut sheets or other oversized items. Contact us first if you are unsure about your item. We request you securely package your item for shipment, as we cannot be responsible for damage in transit to incoming items.
