Now That Is A Name!

I recall quite some time ago being driven by here by my boyfriend, and not believing him when he said the lake had a very, very long name!

Wow, that is long. I read somewhere, years back that a place name in Wales was the longest, but I think that lake in Mass. USA has Wales UK beat by at least several letters.

The small Welsh village with the longest name in Britain is 58 letters in length, the name of your lake, if I count correctly, is 49 letters long. Here is the Welsh one....

Back to the Massachusetts lake, as noted in the Wiki link, the locals refer to it as Webster Lake. Although there are several alternative spellings, this one shown at a shopping plaza near the site has 45 letters, add the word "Lake" and you're up to 49 letters:

From a philatelic standpoint it's too bad they never had a post office, as it would have been a real challenge to get that name in the CDS on a postmark!

If any of these names were to be posted in any of my files, I would be blaming my cat for running over the keyboard.

The Welsh name looks like something I would verbalize after too many drinks. The Massachusetts name looks like the sound I would make while falling down the stairs soon after that...

Shown is a long name on a US postmark: Schleisingerville, Wisconsin. In December of 1921 the town had its name shortened to Slinger. So there is a bit of postal history to this postcard.
