"gob smacked'. Oh, Dear. Once upon a time, I was in business with a Brit (a Yorkshireman, but that couldn't be helped) who was kind enough to explain to me the proper meaning of the word "gob"; he was an otherwise polite & well-mannered fellow, so imagine my relief ;)
While we were at it, I volunteered what "the wife is beavering away in the kitchen" might sound like to an American ear.
