1st day cover with 22k gold leaf stamp replica. Don't know where it came from. Just found it in the desk.

Is it like a first day cover? A fancy first day cover? Or junk?

I'm surprised that the gold leaf didn't light up like an aircraft landing light during scanning. Had quite the opposite effect actually. Sorry it can't be seen better, it looks pretty nice in person.

Stuff like that use to be sold as limited and pushed as investment by companies like Franklin Mint. It use to just sit on ebay with no buyers. I couldn't say what it is worth but not much would be my guess.

The most valuable item on that cover is the cancellation.

And just to note that the First Day Cancellation is the same one that appears on non-gold leaf versions.

I actually pop those little gold stamps out of the holder and keep them separate. They look pretty cool by themselves

Little late to respond .
It is a first day cover note the cancel. Instead of a traditional cache it is a gold foil engraved faux stamp. The process used to make these faux stamps is interesting an engraved image pressed into gold foil . The pressing is bottom up rather than top down found in traditional inked stamps .( I believe. ) The value would be the value of a first day cover . The faux stamp as a cache is a nominal plus .( this said in prior posts)

I bought these as a kid for a short period in the 1980's (well my mom and grandma mostly did). I think they were about $8 each at the time and often came in batches of three. After buying so many they gave you the album. I am not certain, but it may have been sold by the Franklin Mint. We stopped after maybe 100 of them arrived as it got too costly. Now they often sell for around $1-2 each, or less in larger quantities.

I bought a set of the 230-245 (which were a lame gimmick because you did not even receive a real FDC nor a real stamp (just an image of the stamp)). I carefully removed the gold foils and put them on a page and it looks really neat. A set of 22 kt Columbians! I also learned the gold is on a paper support so amazingly the amount of gold is probably worthless. Would be interesting if someone could calculate the amount of gold on the average stamp sized foil. What is the gold really worth?

Gold is calculated by weight , grains, grams , or troy ounce. You would receive the melt price if you can arrange enough of the to make a full grain, gram , etc . Also gold prices are calculated by purity ... 24 karat being the purest and 7 karat relatively speaking containing more base metal . These are the factors which determine liquidation price per lot of gold.

These stamps are pressed into gold foil .
Gold foil is used from decorative purposes and has little to no weight . You do have a genuine FDC IF the cancel presents it ...
The "sticking point" here is bullion vs foil . That stamp is gold ... gold foil not gold bullion.
