okay, and the difference between mine and theirs?

mint, no gum, never hinged, and a thin.
damn, "missed it by that much"

CV for mint NH VF is around $421.75

don't want to bust anyone's bubble but TCO for this stamp with postage was $20.43

lucky at auctions.. sniping at the last minute..

i have 2x 229 one with a torn LRH corner(i did that) and another I replaced it with.
the second 229 was $39.95. sniping works.. they aren't perfect examples but they are nice enough for me.

Mine isn't centered anywhere near as nice as either the PSE-graded 98 or Daryl's for that matter.

It is OG hinged and I was pretty happy with myself when I won it at auction in 1983 for $17.80 (SCV was $110 then and I drove it home so there was no postage to pay or wait time).

Now that I know that those few millimeters of being off-center and the hinge remnant saved me tens of thousands of dollars, I like the stamp even more!

tom.. yours is probably worth more then mine, as mine has ng were as yours has og...
it's not all about the centering.. that is important, the difference between no gum and original gum alone can be 50% of the value.

To me it is a bit like drinking fine wine. In isolation you can drink wine and think how good it is, put it up against something better and it tastes like vinegar. Put an 85 stamp next to 70 stamp, the 85 looks magnificent, put the 85 next to a 95 and it looks like a dog.

There is no way I would pay multiples of 50 or 100x catalogue to obtain items this way but if you are spending the money and your kids are not going hungry as a rsult, more power to you.

I feel that this is all a bit of a nonsense and this paying of extreme multiples for these 95 and 98 point stamps will be seen as a bit of a fad in 15 year's time.

I totally agree. What exactly does a catalog value represent ? an off centered bad example ? The catalog value should be for a "well" centered Stamp in excellent condition with points / value deduction for off center, no gum, etc. Grading will never work in the Stamp world IMHO, it works in the Coin world since they need some type of bulky mount anyways.
