Apparently Linn's Stamp News is reporting that the long postponed (and now apparently cancelled) "Just Move" series of stamps are all being destroyed by the US Postal Service because of concerns from the President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition over alleged "unsafe" acts depicted on three of the stamps (cannonball dive, skateboarding without kneepads and a headstand without a helmet). There's also a batter without a batting helmet, a girl balancing on a slippery rock, and a soccer player without kneepads or shin pads.

I wondered the very same thing.

I also wondered how the USPS could be put in the position to have these stamps designed and printed and inventoried and announced and all ready to be issued only to have these concerns brought up after-the-fact. Didn't someone look into these concerns and/or review the final "copy" of the stamps before it ever made it to the printers?

We survived because we were lucky. I wonder how many were not?

How long will it take the PO to realize that "sneaking" a few dozen of each out after the fire might be good for stamp collecting? They did it for the unvert, why not these?

I'm sure that in the past children were injured and it was often chalked up "don't do that again".
I had tin metal doll houses/kitchens, marbles, metal roller skates, small items that could be swallowed...damn, I must have been very lucky!
But back to the thread topic, goodness, doesn't anyone proof read, check facts, just use gray matter anymore?
I'm very disappointed in the USPS.

That is sad to waste all of the money on printing something that will just be destroyed. And they complain about needing money. I think they should be forced to reink over them or something to save costs.

Yes...back when I was a boy hundreds of people perished due to faulty electric wiring or dropping their radios into the bath. Now you hardly hear of a good old electric shock and it's all due to those trip-switch thingies. Whatever happened to faulty household appliances? Whatever happened to the sheer excitement of switching on something electric and never knowing if you'd end up a pile of charcoal on the floor? Health and safety regulations have taken all the fun out of young people growing up, I say!

Jenny2013 mentioned re-inking the stamps. Austria did something similar with their stamps in giving art schools the opportunity to come up with designs to overprint "old" values and I think the results are not only inventive but also collectible. I think there are eight stamps in the series. Here are two examples of the original alongside the overprinted variety. Surely the same could be done with the Just Move stamps?

This smells like an anti-Obama rumour. I can't believe someone would seriously complain about this, especially a group whose goal is to promote fitness. Even if they did complain for this stupid reason, why would the USPS agree to the complaint? Something is fishy about this.

I'm happy to report that I survived my childhood and I have the scars to prove it. (Some say I am still a child). I get a little tired of how politically correct and how afraid of litigation this world has become. Last night a friend was over for a couple beers. He works for a large city. He brought one of the videos that is part of all the city employees monthly diversity and discrimination training. Basically people are not allowed to talk to or look at each other any more. It was really sad. My wife works in HR for a large downtown law firm where it is even worse. These stamps should not be trashed because they show people being active and may somehow get hurt. They should however be trashed because they are really ugly.

I think some of you guys have gone way, way beyond the original context of the OP and my response.

Really, what does any of this have to do with dropping a radio in a bathtub?

Ask a question...you occasionally get an answer. Glad you survived your childhood anyway.

Too bad the USPS or printer couldn't put employees to separating the 'good' stamps from the 'bad'. Most Post Offices return bad stamps to get the money back.

Or, the USPS could overprint the stamps with 'Don't Do This At Home' or something.

The irony is that our children will probably never see these stamps anyway. My children have almost no contact with modern stamps. Maybe the concern was stupid parents.

Since when have soccer players worn kneepads? Its really dangerous when that ball hits your knee or your knee hits the turf. I'm going to have to talk to our local youth soccer organization as my children are in serious danger of not having fun.
