OK...I'm still chuckling a little, but anyway... Without actual face-to-face, it is sometimes difficult to tell comments made in jest or tongue in cheek from angry ones. So, I love the "blacked-in" safety additions and the idea that someone at USPS could sort the stamps and release the ones that are not harmful to society. A day without laughter is no fun! |

I read this too. Really? This is ridiculous. No cannonballs. No headstand without a helmet? This seems removed from reality.

In protest I decided to sit at my computer with no protective gear whatsoever. I am throwing caution to the wind. |

Just curious. How is a cannonball any more dangerous than just jumping in the water? Your body is closed and protected - beats a belly flop any day!. Are they saying that cannon-ballers by nature try to land on other swimmers? That's discrimination! Bad Sports committee...
How can you even do a proper headstand with a helmet on? Headstands as a rule may not be the best idea for kids unless they are done properly in any case (too much weight on neck). Still, you are supposed to use your forehead and hands as the balance points. Are they concerned you will bang your head on a rock? Nobody dives into a headstand, it is usually a very slow process to get the balance. Usually you end up falling backward and your back takes a thump, not your head. Who are these sports safety committee people? Kids can't go through life wearing a safety helmet.
Knee pads....really? Usually a kid will decide if they prefer the risk of a scrape or they want the freedom to move and perhaps not look "uncool". Any kid that can use a skateboard is old enough to make that call in my opinion - the helmet is much more important. A fall can cause serious head injury.
Having said that, you can even injure your wrist doing a cartwheel, but that's not on the hit list. There is a lot to be said for common sense. Minor bumps and bruises are a part of life.
I have some strong views on this as a teacher. In just the last ten years even, the school board I work for has banned the following (due to possible injury, but mainly due to the risk of being sued by a parent): throwing snowballs, sliding or rolling down a hill on the school ground at recess (in summer or winter), standing on snow hills, sliding on ice patches, going near puddles, touching another child for any reason (hands-off policy - tag is Ok within reason - don't tag too hard or we will ban it), playing on the climbing equipment unless a teacher is right there with you (usually not possible on a large school yard), etc, the list goes on. Not much left except running around aimlessly in the open spaces, and what kid likes to do that?
OK - back to stamps...The question that was raised about stamp quality assurance/approval was a good one. In Canada, every stamp has to be approved by a committee and signed off by the Postmaster General. No, after-the-fact committees allowed to complain.

Instead of destroying the stamps and wasting more money. Have them for sale to collectors (or apparently nostalgic people from before one wore helmets while doing cannonballs in the water). I would buy a couple sheets for sure and proudly use them on mail. I would even sign a disclaimer that I would not do the "Just move" things without proper protection. |

The concern probably had more to do with goodie-goodies and do-rights and the politically correct everything. Everyone sues everyone for everything these days so that a likely good reason for this err to caution. Stupid really but in this world today it certainly doesn't shock me.
Example: Remember KISS in the 70's and all the parents freaking out and saying their logo stood for everything under the sun My personal favorite was Knights in Satan's Services. Ha-ha yeah right! lol Now look at some of the kids video games- They're are 1000x's worse than that ever was! |

This person is completely unaware of the dangers of archery. Arrows are pointy and can hurt. Archery can be fun but always remember that IT IS ONLY FUN UNTIL SOMEONE GETS HURT...(then it's absolutely hilarious) Point made |

Once again the humor and wit in the above comments justs makes me laugh! I assume that many of you are being humourous and witty, right? Thank you all for sharing! By the way, if we all wear knee pads at all times to prevent possible scrapes...what about all the bandage manufacturers and their employees? Perhaps USPS could hire them to "black in" the appropriate safety items on these poor, sad stamps. |
