Phil do not forget that many Post Offices in the Adirondacks will have one small office taking care of multiple towns. Many old mining towns when shut down were either incorporated into a single office or retained the zip but the mail was handled by a single Post Office. Or may have original zip but there office is now closed.

I have found that many small communities in rural or farming areas still have a zip code assigned to them, but they have no post office in the town itself. I have been collecting postmarks of each remaining town along route 66 in Illinois for a little over a year now. There are approx. 66 and I have collected over 30 all on the same map so far.

Phil,
You can always go to the USPS website and do a search for post office by town or zip code.

Phil:

Remember that the ZIP Code was introduced in 1963. Some post offices have closed since then; and some of those lists are out-of-date.

Careful research!

So, are you sending a letter to the Postmaster, (Wherever), and enclosing a return envelope that they can postmark to send back to you, or what method are you using?

The town I live in never had a post office. It was on a RFD route
from the neighboring city. We are assigned an address bearing the
city name and one of its zip codes, even though the town, itself
is in the next county!

If you know a post office is about to close, I suppose you can do that.
I have seen some "last day" covers of this kind. But collecting Discontinued
Post Offices is largely a matter of finding the postmarks on old covers.

Glad to see you looking at postmarks, Phil! I think they are as much fun as the stamps.
