Hi everyone!

I just found this community while looking for a good stamp forum. I already took some time to read a few posts and I must say there seem to be quite a bit of stamp knowledge around here.

The reason I join is simple; I want to help my uncle out. He collects just about everything : coins, stamps, hockey cards (yes, we are Canadians hehe!), baseball cards, tickets, you name it.

As he is getting older, he would like to start selling some of his stuff and we decided to start out with a few stamps. I'm therefore hoping to learn more about stamps here and get to know the best way to know the value of the stamps I have and the best places to sell them to other collectors.

I hope you won't mind my ignorance on the history of stamps !

KP

Welcome kp0c to the forum. You came to the right spot as there are many very knowledgeable philatelists and general collectors here as you are already aware. Be warned though...the more you learn the more you will get the urge to collect stamps yourself! We love questions so don't be shy! Again, Welcome to SCF! Sincerely -Jeff

Hi, I'm new myself. Books and catalogs that you can purchase used on ebay will help with the fundamentals. I have been collecting with my grandmother since the 1960's and still find out I have a lot to learn. Stamp collecting is very enjoyable. Time consuming to the point of headaches. lol.. You may want to hold on to the stamps, they hold so much history and mystery. I also have sports cards and coins. I sell my sports cards, not my stamps or coins. The stamps will go to my children and grandchildren. That's why its important to involve the youth of today in how great of a hobby stamp collecting is. I found the best way to make money is in stocks. Much higher payouts than stamps, unless of course you happen to have that "Treasure Stamp". I'm still looking for it though. I've recently started going thru my 2 cent Washington stamps 1912-1920 and boy is it fun trying to identify those. If those stamps are from all the different countries then finding some old 6 volume catalogs on ebay will help with detailed identification of all the different country's. Hope this helps a little for you and I look forward to interaction with you out here in the community. Gary

Wow, already some warms welcomes. Thank you guys for that.
Gary, you are probably right, my uncle should probably pass his collection to someone... I'm sure he thought about it though, so I assume he wants to estimate the value of his collection before he makes a decision.
I know he has stamps from all over the world. The binder he gave me last week (to start evaluate, a little at a time!) has a huge collection of US stamps, from way back. It has also a Canadian collection inside. I know he has many stamps from Germany and all over Europe as well... TBH, I went into his collection room so to speak, and my mind can barely grasp the extend of his collections. We shall see where it leads us.
