An interesting read with a cute book title:

"Maybe We Need A Letter From God, The Star Trek Stamp."

***** A similar type story ****

The first space shuttle was originally supposed to be named Constitution, in honor of the United States' bicentennial celebrations in 1976. However, a massive fan letter campaign organized by Bjo Trimble produced over 200,000 letters asking President Gerald Ford to name the shuttle Enterprise after the Star Trek starship (which, ironically, is Constitution-class) instead.

In the end, as far as the shuttles that went into space, neither "Constitution" or "Enterprise" were names. Maybe I'm too much of a Trekkie (original), but I would think the first name that would come to mind for a spacecraft of it's capabilities would have been "Enterprise".

Weren't there 5?

Space Shuttle Atlantis
Space Shuttle Challenger
Space Shuttle Columbia
Space Shuttle Discovery
Space Shuttle Endeavour

Enterprise was the test shuttle that never breached space . Basically tested for landings. Just some neat facts of history regarding the name . You are correct with the 5 "space craft shuttles".

I never understood why Star Trek fans petitioned for this ship to be named "Enterprise". They must have known that it was never going to fly. Makes no sense.
