Hi

If I was looking to buy or invest in a specific series of Modern stamps. What would I buy.

Older I like the Franklin/Washington series. But what about modern?

You ask a tough question and I'll I'll attempt to answer you. Modern stamps, stamps in general, are generally a bad investment if your looking for monetary gains. Now that's not saying that there aren't investment grade stamps, however they are usually prohibitively expensive and certainly out of the reach of the regular hobbyist and is really a gamble on any sort of return as the market fluctuates so rapidly. Usually it is recommended that one should collect stamps for fun and not expect any sort of profit as far as money goes. I can't speak for others, but I personally have spent more on my "little collection" than I would ever hope to get in return for it should I ever decide to sell it. In my opinion the modern issues (1950-present) are probably most valuable as postage -There are exceptions but not many. I'm sure someone will chime in and correct me but in general collector grade stamps are just that -for collectors. If you have big bucks you can contact Stanley Gibbons or any of the big stamp brokers for whats called investment grade material but chances are if you have that kind of money you don't need to invest in anything to begin with. I hope this helps you out some?

The Washington Franklin issues is a great area to collect and study. I know that they have kept me out of trouble for long time! lol You really need a good reference book or site to identify them correctly, most of them anyway. Here is what I use and I suppose many of us do - is the 1847usa webpage. - http://www.1847usa.com/washfrankmain.htm

Happy collecting and Merry Christmas! -Jeff

Buy real Dennison stamp hinges instead;
- they have far outperformed any stamp investment since 1960, they have appreciated over 4000%
- the supply is continually being depleted
- the demand may fall slightly over next 10 years but it appears that no one will ever be able to reproduce a truly 'peelable' stamp hinge

In my opinion investing in modern stamps - US or elsewhere - is like burning money.

So: invest in something else, but collect stamps, because this is an investment in your pleasure ... and one or 2 of the stamps in your collection might be an investment ... many years later.

I like the high value Waves of Colour issue. Used is selling for face or more depending on the postmarks and clear cancels.

The newer or older? circles with right hand bars are a great large raedable cancel and look good on these also.

I don't know anything about investing because 1. I collect for the fun of it; 2. I don't have the money to collect "investment" stamps.

But that does beg the question - what price do basic investment stamps start at? I figured you might get your money back on anything from $50 to $250, and maybe you can start making money if you spend $250 (per stamp) or more.

I would love to hear what those in the know have to say.

If you want to make some money, invest in some lottery tickets. Stamps may make some money, but you are more likely to hit it big on the lottery.

I would buy a lot of the modern "Inverted Jenny" Souvenir Sheets, hoping to get one of the USPS special issue of the Jenny in upright position.

At least you can use them for postage later on. Who knows that your heirs might need $2.00 stamps for first class postage.
