Interesting I Assume that the "S.S.Cape May" Was Not A Military Vessel Hence The Lack Of "Free" Franking Privileged??. You Would Think That A Letter To Naval HQ Would Not Be Returned. DJD |

Nice pictures of these US Postage Dues. Years ago I have been studying Dutch Postage Dues and I put what I'd learned on this website (part of my stamps website, that I really ought to update soon...) |

Just a guess, but I believe an S.S. designation before a ship's name stands for Steam Ship with the name of the passenger vessel following, for example, S.S. France or in this case S.S. Cape May. |

Larry...anytime !! Just look at Scott..no J stamps I have never been to Germany, but someone told me years ago, that there are no mailboxes, and you must bring your mail to the Post Offices. If that is true, I Guess that there would be no need for Postage Due Stamps. |

That's a nice gift. It looks like it was sent without postage from Rome, Italy to Minnesota. Are there any markings on the back? |

World War II began in September, 1939. Here are two censored postage due covers sent from Bombay, India (then part of the British Empire) to New York City shortly after the war began in 1939. The first was sent on October 20th, 1939 and arrived 22c postage due. The second was sent on November 9th, 1939 and arrived 2c postage due. The US dues are canceled with "Madison Square Station" double ovals. The Indian stamps all have portraits of King George VI and are from the Mail Transport series of 1937-1940. The purple 2a6p values (Sc. #155) show a dak bullock cart. The peacock blue 6a value (#159) shows a mail steamship and the blue violet 8a stamp (#160) features a mail truck. |
