The gauge essayk may be referring to is the Sonic Imagery Labs Precision U.S. Specialty Multi-Gauge. Its a pretty good tool to use for precision measurements. Its a bit pricey but I think worth it.
I agree with chasa that having a known standard for comparison is best. But my understanding is that you have 8 examples and cannot tell one from another, and that they all have the same perf measurement. Doesn't sound like you have a basis for a comparison, so do the best you can with your ruler and gauge. If you find one that is different from the others, then you might want to show it to someone who can make a more critical comparison.
