I accidentely put my 11 in the 10 spot of the new album I bought and didn't realize it until yesterday. No idea how I did that as it was in the 11 spot when I swapped it. Now I need to find a 10 to put in the mount. Figures I'd screw up the first stamp in the new album LOL

These are all the stamps I had in my 11 glassine:

I don't think there are any OB's in there. However, I think you probably have a couple fairly decent color specimens. In the top row 2nd from the left you have what I think is probably a good example of 1856 yellowish rose red. The last stamp in the top row is a Plate 1L stamp in what appears to be printed in an 1852 brownish carmine. Can you post better images of those two stamps side by side? Make sure that YRR is flat when you scan it, please.

Possibly the second one in from the left on both the top & bottom row COULD be #10's but hard to see from that scan.

That second stamp on the bottom row is actually a Plate 4 stamp. There is no chance of it being a #10.

I was just going to post something to that effect sinclair! lol There is really no hard and fast easy rule to I.D.-ing the #10's because they can both (#10's & #11's) be found in a type I. AND a type II. and the plate "0" (which is actually a plate #4 re-used I think?) can makes things a bit of "fun" to decipher. Color is one of the "easiest" ways to tell as the new ink tended to print the design much sharper but that too can be deceiving because it also wore out the plates faster and 10's with different plate states can be looked for, so you can see how it can get real confusing real fast! Plating is really the only shure-fire way to know. You should look into Carrol Chase's reference on these. Fascinating stuff! I am on my phone so if I'm not making sense that's why..

I think the one that I said was yellowish rose red is a pretty good example of the color. The brownish carmine... not so much, there are better examples to be had. Of course judging color in scans is not something a person should do all of the time but I am pretty sure we are both seeing the same color. Good luck filling your 10/10A spots.

If anybody is interested I have some inexpensive, low-grade 10's and 10A's that I can sell.

Hi Mike,

No chance any of those are #10. Your first enlargement is from plate 5 Late, probably a yellowish rose red. Your second enlargement is from plate 1 Late. These are easy to identify by the heavy inking in the upper right corner. This stamp is most likely a brownish carmine, but could be a deep dull red. It would help to see them in person.

The stamp at top left in the set of eight is sulfuretted (see article below). In other words, it is darkened/discolored by exposure to sulfur dioxides.

I wrote an article on identifying #10s at the below address:

Thanks for the info guys. I didn't expect one of these to be a 10 anyway. They were all stored as 11s

Sinclair - how inexpensive can I get a 10 for?
