Hi all, Could someone please enlighten me as to what this pair is? I bought a stack of old envelopes and this specific pair has a cancel date of Nov 30th from Independence Iowa 1908. They are perf 12. Respectfully, Gary

It could be a booklet pair.

Looks like Scott #300. Since there are straight edges, these might have come from booklet pane 300b. While 300 is common, according to Scott, the booklet pane is relatively rare. There's no mention of what a used pair might be worth. Someone with more knowledge would need to chime in on whether your pair does come from 300b. Mint 300b panes catalog for $600 ($1150 NH), used for $11500.
Added: 300 was issued in 1903, 300b in 1907. Your 1908 date indicates it could possibly be from 300b.

Looks like Scott 300b. A pair taken from a booklet pane of 6 stamps. Issued March 6, 1907. Certainly a collectible, but just don't confuse it with the hefty catalog listings for an entire booklet pane of 6, though. The pairs are worth only a small fraction thereof. In fact, here's a cover with a similar pair that was on ebay late last year for less than $25 but with no bids.

Complete booklets are very scarce, especially used, but pairs and singles from booklets are very common. Which makes philatelic sense, full booklets have a very poor survival rate.

Thank you all very much for the information. I thought it may have been cut on the left side, its hard to tell without soaking and removing them. Gary

I wonder if he will get the asking price or even a best offer on this one? I did see 2 covers sold at Siegel for $160.00 in 2010

The only reason those were even a lot in the Siegel sale is that the auction was for a great booklet collection, and people were buying the name as much as anything. Bill Langs always asks for the moon when he sells on ebay; this cover was probably from that auction three and a half years ago. Pay $160+15% for two and ask $950 for one. Pretty good deal (for him).

FWIW, Siegel has a census of used booklet panes.

If two covers brought $160 then Langs asking $950 and having it sit on ebay for years seems about right.
