jon,

Without a picture, my best guess is it has the same value as any other one cent franklin coil stamp that is cancelled and in the same condition.

You probably have a precanceled stamp with Manitowoc, Wisconsin in two lines between two bars. There are a number of different precancel styles of overprinting done to some of these stamps. They were intended to be used by large volume mailers and because they were precanceled, it avoided the need for the post office to cancel each and every piece of mail.

Precancels are a collecting specialty and there are literally thousands upon thousands of different overprints for various cities and towns across the US. The majority have little value, but they are a collectible to those specializing in them.

Does it look something like this?

Precancels are not the same as overprints. The Kansas/Nebraska stamps you refer to are overprints ... wt1's example is a precancel. Do not confuse the two. The overprints are assigned their own specific catalog numbers ... precancels are not.

jon, welcome to the forum. It may be a bit confusing to hear that pre-cancel stamps are not overprints. Pre-cancels are printed over the stamp just as are overprints. The true difference between the two are their usage. Overprints on US stamps were used to change a common stamp to commemorate a special event or prevent stamp theft (in the case of the Nebraska and Kansas overprints). Pre-cancel stamps were used to identify the city of origin for bulk mailers in order to speed processing of large mailings. There are an unknown number of pre-cancels; well over a million different ones.

Hi Jon - welcome to the forum

I always separate my precancels and put them aside. Someday I'll do something with them

jon,

If you haven't already done so, swing down to the precancel forum and begin exploring that area of collecting. Precancels are not for everyone, but if you like geography, precancels are really fun.
