As a 'limey' from the Channel Island of Jersey (after which New Jersey was named)I am struggling to find this stamp catalogued in Scott's or elsewhere. It is dark green rather than the grey/black it looks like in the photo. New York Post Office 5 cents. Any help would be really appreciated !
Regards,Dave

A very crude forgery of a New York Postmaster's Provisional. Look at the very beginning of your Scott's US catalogue to the the real thing.
Neat, I think. But then I like forgeries.

Forgeries are a whole study themselves and can be worth quite a bit in some cases. (I like them too!) Something like you have could have very well been done in the same time period and may have been actually used. There are fake cancels as well . I have never studied this series so can't direct you where and what to look for but someone will likely light the way.

I would cancel the world cruise too Davejersey. What you saved on the world trip, you might be able to buy the original for.

A common type of used 9X1 only cats about $500-$600, so it's not quite world cruise territory.

Here's what the 9X1 Postmaster Provisional should look like (taken from my collection). I never had it checked out (expertized) so I don't know if it's genuine or not, but I believe it is:
