Need some help on this one. I have had it for some time and finally just getting around on the research. Listing in Scott Specialized in section Local Posts under year 1853-54 (#89L2) closest I could come but color is not right. Any ideas on this one?

I've checked it out and the color is wrong, as you say. Is that a lot of white background around it, or could it be a proof?

I shouldn't have really called it a stamp because it is actually a imprinted card. The engraving is correct and matches but as stated the color is wrong.

Yeah, then it's likely a printer's proof.

Well maybe one step closer to finding this one out. Pretty good on net searches but have come up blank so far. It is just one of those that has peaked my curiosity. I have shown it to a few collectors and stumped them also.

I believe this is a attempt at creating forgory, this stamp it looks like is oval around Washington's portrait on 89L1, here circular, shading in of hair, too lite and face, too dark. The color is wrong, possiblily over inked. Even though the stamp is known on a card, it is supposed to be in the upper left corner not centered. Original card stock, I believe, should have a watermark, the paper on this one seems too new, not yellowed.

Aha! I came across this in a auction and snapped it up for reference. Pretty much gives a case closed.

Great post,
answered two questions for me.

I was doubting it was a proof, as I assume
that proofs were generally produced with genuine official stamps,
I could see no reason to have a proof of a local.

I hadn't considered proofs being produced some generaions later.

looks like maybe a small die proof on card to me. If the color is wrong from the one issued then a progressive essay on card or perhaps a presentation specimen....never mind
