Really a tough call on this one from the picture. The Stamp is over 100 years old and appears to be a tad faded. Carmine ?

maybe..but most of These havent seen sunlight in about 50 years I'd guess. They used to be my dads but 5 Kids and too many other passions kinda put a slow down on collection.

An errant question: (not necessarily a suggestion, more of a suspicion) but is it possible somebody exposed this to a chemical. It might be an alteration depending on what it was next to for some time. I've encountered stamps on envelopes that were stuffed in boxes of assorted substances, like the old iodine bottles. IF (perhaps) something in the box leaked could it have altered the color ? I've seen those old black rubber dropper squeeze bulbs dry out, crack and let the contents evaporate into the boxes staining stuff.

Hi. Honestly it is all possible. I have no real idea how it has been stored for the last 100 years. the stamps were crudly attached to loose cardboard Sheets for the last 40 years or so..but before that? But the stamps around it are all fine. the only reason I dont think it is Fading is that the colour of the stamp is consistant, the same all over. But I have read that there were issues in orange/red and orange/Brown so why could it not be one of These? Unfortunatly I dont know how many of These were issued.

If you believe it's an Orange example of the Stamp then send it in for certification.

I think I will.. just sorting trough the collection and think there might be one or two more worth getting checked, then will do them together. whether that will pay for itself is another matter. I dont even know what an orange Version would be worth so a second and third opinion can never hurt.

I hate to state the obvious, but the stamp could have been faded 50-100 years ago no matter how it was stored. Personally I would listen to the experts here - had the stamp been issued in this color, it would have been discovered and reported by now.

Hi Kevin.. I must appologise. I did not realise I was insulting those who know better. That was certainly not my Intention.. On the web site 1847.com it does say that in 1899 there was a stamp in Brown orange type 4 produced. It is a type 4 and it has an orange colour. But please dont think or believe that I dont respect and listen to the comments I have recieved. I do.

Your stamp is not brown orange either, but since you are so convinced otherwise, please send it for certification and let us know the results. For your information this is brown orange:

This is a faded/color changed stamp, so no matter what it turns out to be, it has no value:
