There are several printings of this stamp with some orange ink included in color formula, particularly 279Bd see: http://www.theswedishtiger.com/279B-scotts.html However, none of these 2 cents stamps have an orange as bright as yours so I would agree that had been exposed to something that caused it to appear so orangish in color. Red is a color that is notorious for fading. Please check the web page I include above. the site is full of detailed information.

thank you all. I dont mean to be a pain. Unfortunatly I am alone here in Austria in my new found Passion, with only the Internet to guide my way. No People, no books, very few examples to compare with and a cheap Laptop to try and guess colours from. But at least now I know what a faded red stamp Looks like.

decrynne you are not a pain - perhaps persistent would be a better descriptor Please ask anything you want. We are very fortunate on this forum to have many experts who generously give of their time to educate us about our stamps. I would be interested to see more of your collection. Who knows? You just might find a hidden gem!

I agree with Jenny2U. Don't consider yourself a pain and I like his preferred term of persistent. I personally have a few stamps that I bring back up for comments and opinions. One of those also has to do with a color variation. My mother's family believe their ancestors came to the USA from Austria in the 1800s. The name is Zearfoss. Is this a name that is common or at least known to exist in Austria?

Hi. I live in this area for the last 14 years and I honestly have never heard of the Name. But I am quite sure the pronunciation and spelling would have changed some when moving to America. Many of the Family names were just signed at immegration the way they sounded. That is what happened to many of the Irish names anyway.
