I've been reading the old books in the Electronic Library at USPCS.org. It's great that they've made these available, most are very expensive.

As I was paging through all the fancy cancels in Cole's "Cancellations and Killers of the Banknote Era" I noticed one called the broken heart (HE-26 - HE-29), and it made me think of this stamp. It's not pretty, but not just an ink smudge, so I've always been a little curious as to what it is. Is this some postmasters attempt to copy the broken heart cancel? Probably a stretch, but it looks like it's supposed to be SOMETHING.

I'm also curious about the cancel on this postcard. What is that little killer right on the edge of the stamp? It also looks like it's supposed to be something, but maybe it's just a partial imprint.

I found one other Bowling Green cover from 13 years earlier with a somewhat similar killer. Looks strange to me, but Im definitely no cancel expert.

I think the cancel on the 6-cent Lincoln is just a worn out, common circle of four wedges cancel with two of the wedges joined together.

Thanks guys, thats probably what it is. Based on our weather, Im calling it a map of the United States with two huge rain clouds.

Also, I believe your stamp has been re-perforated on at least 2 sides.

I noticed that on the right, but wondered if it was just a scissors cut. Which other side? Its funny anyone would spend the time reperfing this stamp.

edit: top?

Chewie, I thought it looked like a man waving (blowing away is a new twist:). I don't know if the other postmark I linked to is the same hand cancel stamp. Not that it matters, since I can't tell what that one is either.

raymodj, I believe your right. The #300 appears to be just scissor cut
